Retaining walls are a practical and stylish solution for managing sloped gardens, creating garden beds, and improving the functionality of outdoor spaces. While there are many ways to build a retaining wall, using Y-pickets as posts offers a quick, cost-effective, and DIY-friendly method—especially for low-height walls.

In this blog, we’ll guide you through the basic steps of building a simple timber retaining wall using Y-pickets.

Why Use Y-Pickets?

Y-pickets (also known as steel star pickets) are a durable and convenient alternative to traditional timber or concrete posts. They are:

  • Strong and weather-resistant

  • Lightweight and easy to install

  • Ideal for low retaining walls (under 500mm)

Our hot-dip galvanized Y-pickets provide superior corrosion resistance, making them perfect for outdoor use.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Treated timber sleepers (standard: 200mm high, 50mm thick)

  • Y-pickets (1.5m or 1.8m depending on wall height)

  • Sledgehammer or post driver

  • Spirit level

  • Gravel for drainage

  • Landscape fabric (optional)

  • Screws or brackets for timber fixing

  • Shovel and basic tools

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Plan and Measure

Mark out the area where your retaining wall will go. Measure the length and height to calculate how many sleepers and Y-pickets you’ll need.

📌 Tip: Place a Y-picket every 1.2–1.5 meters for proper support.

Step 2: Install the Y-Pickets

Using a sledgehammer or post driver, hammer the Y-pickets into the ground at your marked intervals. Make sure each picket is:

  • Driven at least 600mm into the ground

  • Vertically level using a spirit level

  • Aligned in a straight line

Step 3: Prepare the Base

Dig a shallow trench (approx. 100mm deep) along the base of the wall line. Add a layer of gravel to help with drainage and provide a stable foundation.

Step 4: Install Timber Sleepers

Place your first row of timber sleepers behind the Y-pickets. You can fix them to the Y-pickets using:

  • U-brackets

  • Timber screws

  • Wire ties (for non-structural applications)

Stack additional rows as needed, ensuring each is securely fastened and level.

Step 5: Backfill and Finish

Once the wall is in place:

  • Lay landscape fabric behind the sleepers (optional, for weed control)

  • Backfill the area with gravel or soil for stability

  • Compact the backfill gently as you go

Key Considerations

  • For walls higher than 500mm, engineering advice or more robust posts may be required.

  • Always check local council regulations for maximum allowable height without permit.

  • Use only H4 treated pine sleepers or hardwood for ground contact durability.
