How to Install Artificial Turf

Step 1: Measure and Plan

Measure your garden and calculate total square meter of synthetic turf needed for your project, select the grass you are going to install and come up with a turf plan for your yard. Keep in mind that grass rolls come in 2m width and 4m width, ideally you would like to keep all the turf grain going the same direction throughout your entire project.

Step 2: Excavation

To remove your existing grass top soil, we recommend using a mini excavator, such as mini diggers, bobcat, etc, this will save your time and energy, or alternatively, a shovel. With the top layer removed, you also need to remove old soil to a depth of 8cm-10cm. Try to dig your yard out as evenly as possible, this will speed up raking out process. A Wheelbarrow can be used to take out all the removed soil and grass. Once excavation is done, you want to rake your existing base as evenly as possible.

Step 3: Base Construction

With the yard nice and leveled, it’s time to bring the base into the yard. Place 5cm of crushed rock/20mm road base over entire area, a wheelbarrow will be very useful at this step as well, try to dump each load the same amount, which will be easier for you to rake evenly to prepare for the next step. Once you’ve got the base as leveled as possible, you want to water it thoroughly to allow to settle and compacting. With the compacter, you can easily hire it from Bunnings. Run it at a certain pattern, will help to insure the base is compacted throughout.Use a plate tamper to compact to get those areas that the compactor can’t reach. To compact  around trees and other areas, simply use a timber bar and a hammer. Once your base is compacted, look over the entire area for imperfections you might need to either fill or flatten. After crushed rock has been compacted, another 2-3cm crusher dust/stone will be recommended to put on top of crushed rock, which will make the base surface smoother, simply repeat the steps like before. 

Step 4: Rolling out Turf and Seaming

Refer back to your turf plan drawing, get the grass length cut to the size from The Garden of Paradise, bring the roll to the area, roll out the turf, if joining needed, make sure grass fibers are facing the same direction. Try to get the backing of both pieces as close as possible without overlapping. If there is black plastic edge on seam of the grass, you will need to cut the plastic first and then join the grass together.

Using our Self-adhesive Joining Tape, will no longer need to apply glue. Lay the tape half under one piece and half under the other, fold turf away from seam, ideally, clean all the dust on the backing of seaming part of the grass before peeling the covering paper of the tape. Be careful not to bury any fibers.

Step 5: Securing the Turf and Sand Filling

Nail the edge and the seam of the grass every 20-25cm, ideally, in the middle, 1m apart to make the grass extra secure. Make a few holes at the bottom of our 25kg Silica Infill Sand bag, hold the bag and walk zig zag in straight line. Alternatively, empty sand bags into a wheel barrow. With a flat headed shovel spread the sand around as evenly as possible. Use a wire broom or a power broom to drop the sand into the grass. Make sure to brush in the opposite direction that fibers are laying, so that when sand is dropped in, grass fibers will stand upright.
